The Fuego Story

Long before I ever stood on a surfboard, I was in love with the ocean. The beach has always felt like home to me - the sound of crashing waves, salty air, sun-soaked days, and the laid-back spirit of surf culture. There was something about it that always pulled me in. I spent my childhood (and adult) years vacationing at the Jersey Shore.

But it wasn't until a trip to Hawaii in 2022 that I discovered surfing for myself.  In the second year of the COVID pandemic, surfing entered my life from what I thought was just going to be another excursion to cross off the list. As an intensive care unit nurse at the time, it was the meditative experience I deeply needed. The moment I cleared my head (on the fourth try), I popped up and felt that addictive natural high. I was hooked! It wasn't about being the best surfer. It still isn't. It was about how surfing made ME feel - free, present, challenged, and alive.

It also made me feel healthy. Being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at age 28, some days require more patience, more determination, and more grace than others. Surfing has become one of my greatest sources of strength, both mentally and physically. It keeps me moving, pushes me outside of my comfort zone, clears my mind, and reminds me what my body is still capable of doing almost two decades later.

The ocean doesn't care about diagnoses - it simply asks you to show up and keep trying.

Surfing has borrowed some accomplishments I've learned from being a nurse as well - resilience and perseverance.

Fuego is for the dreamers like me. For the late starters, the weekend warriors, the beach lovers, and anyone who's ever discovered a passion that changed their life. It's a reminder it's never too late to try something new, chase an adventure, or find joy in unexpected places.

Whether you're a lifelong surfer or someone who simply feels at peace near the water, I'm thankful you're here.
